I have been thinking about the problem of going from a traditional society to a modern society to study in search of a better environment. Of course, there are good things about studying in a modern society. For example, people can acquire culture that they cannot acquire by living in a traditional society, and they may be able to get a good paying job to escape poverty. However, there are still many difficulties in studying in a modern society while being born and raised in a traditional society. It would be better if they could be in a modern society from the elementary school when they start their education, but it is often difficult for them to live on their own, so they often enter a modern school in the middle of their education program. When students enter school in the middle of their education, their prerequisites are different from others and they have no knowledge of the subject. As a result, they may not be able to understand the content of the classes and may end up staying in school or, in the worst case, quitting the school. Also, when there are no more people with traditional education, there are no more people who can speak the traditional language of the area, and the culture is reduced. I thought that we are required to know the good and bad points of each education and to think and act accordingly.
Also, in class, we had to debate whether it is better to introduce a Western education system or to continue a traditional education system in developing countries. Since I was on the team that favored Western education, my group members and I discussed the advantages of modern education over traditional education. It was very interesting because I did not have many opportunities to debate in my classes in my home country. I think I was able to deepen my thinking from many different angles, not only by considering the advantages of Western education, but also by the process of considering the advantages of traditional educational systems and anticipating the opposing team's arguments.
